Evanston Main Street Overview
Iconically cast in neon lights, “Newspapers, Magazines, Out of Town Papers” sits at the southwest corner of Chicago and Main Street, and marks a key landmark for this unique Evanston neighborhood.
Main Street provides a series of uniquely Evanston experiences in the form of great ethnic eats, live theatre, and the Custer Fair which brings arts & crafts and performance together in this annual summertime event that sprawls throughout the neighborhood.
Speaking of the Custer Fair; one of the many groups you will see in attendance during that two-day festival are actors from the Piccolo Theatre, which is located inside of the Evanston Main Street Metra train station. In fact, the one-time dilapidated train station has undergone nearly $4.5 million in renovations since 1995 to become a cultural center within this energetic neighborhood. The motto of the theatre troupe: “Our mission is to make you laugh!”, which gives you a clear sense for what to expect with their performances!
Some of Evanston’s most popular food locales are in this area with the fantastic Italian spot La Campagnola, Hoosier Mama’s sweet and savory pies, and Firehouse – a great neighborhood joint built inside of an old Evanston fire station. Additionally, you can find one of the better gyros in Chicagoland at Cross-Rhodes.
